History of Wrestling In The Superdome

In the summer of 1976, LeRoy McGuirk began holding big cards in the Louisiana Superdome. These were huge cards that featured not only the biggest stars of the territory, but also stars from other regions as well. One of the biggest cards was held on Christmas night, 1978. This was a one night tournament for the vacant United States Tag Title, which was won by none other than Andre the Giant and Dusty Rhodes.

All of the Superdome cards were great shows, featuring blow-off matches for many of the feuds taking place in the territory. Here are 2 clippings from the Wrestling News that discuss the entire history of these cards up until August, 1980. Enjoy!

Paul Orndorff - One of the All-Time Greats!

I heard a few days ago that Paul Orndorff has been diagnosed with cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul and his family. If anyone can beat this terrible disease, Mr. Wonderful can!

Before Paul headlined Wrestlemania, he was a mainstay in the Tri-State/Mid-South rings, holding the North American title 3 times. He had many classic matches against such greats as Ted DiBiase, Junkyard Dog, and Ernie Ladd, just to name a few.

I wanted to share a few pictures. Enjoy!

Terry Taylor and the "Monster Belt"

Here's an even better pic of the "monster belt" from when Terry Taylor was North American champion. "Cowboy" Bill Watts told me that the belt weighed around 27 pounds and had a lot of silver and a good bit of gold in it. This was one beautiful belt.

Help With This Belt - Where Did It Come From?

Can someone out there help me out here? This North American belt was carried by Scandor Akbar and Ahman Hussein in 1974 and by Dick Murdoch in 1975. I know this was during the time that Bill Watts took the original belt to Georgia, and I believe they used the Gulf Coast belt as the N.A. belt for at least a little while. Any idea where this belt came from, who made it, and where it may be now? Please help!

Magnum T.A. and the Monster Belt

Check out this pic from an old Superdome program of Magnum T.A. with the North American Heavyweight Title belt. This belt, nicknamed the "Monster Belt" because of its massive size, replaced the old belt with Magnum being the first champion to carry it.

Hollywood Blonds - 1976

Check out this page from an old program from 1976. This was the beginning of the Hollywood Blonds last title reign as United States Tag champs. Jerry Brown and Buddy Roberts held the belts on 4 occasions during the 1970's and were one of the most hated teams of all time in the territory.

Brown later won the title with Bobby Jaggers as his partner.

The Winner of Contest #3 is...

Ken of Houma, La. Ken was one of only a handful to correctly identify the mystery wrestler as "Crazy" Chuck Karbo.

Karbo had a great run in the Tri-State/Championship Wrestling area in 1969, becoming the first ever North American Heavyweight champion and holding the belt on 3 occasions. He feuded with none other than the legendary Danny Hodge for the belt, defeating Danny twice for the title.

Chuck also held the United States Tag Title on one occasion with Chati Yokouchi.

Thanks to everyone who sent in guesses, and a big thanks to everyone for checking out my blog.

Shreveport - June 1, 1984

Here's a clipping from a great card headlined by the Rock-N-Roll Express vs. the Midnight Express. This was a super-hot feud with some great action. Also on the card was the "return" of the JYD in a lights-out match against "Hacksaw" Butch Reed, a Women's World Tag Team title match, and a match between Mr. Wrestling (Johnny Walker) vs. Mr. Wrestling II (Hercules Hernandez). Enjoy!
